ANCHR's Artist of the Day: The Ophelias
At first impression The Ophelias sound like the result of an avant-garde school choir. But their youthful sound juxtaposes their more goth presence. Vocalist Spencer Peppet is delicate and reverberating, singing in warnings over a hopscotch drum and syncopating snares. Prone to writing in unique time signatures the band artfully deconstruct each instrument before rebuilding it with an added beauty and distortion. Sweeping and stealthy they stitch together something both innocent and insidious. Andrea Gutmann Fuentes’ violin undercuts most of their discography, adding an elegance to somewhat disturbing lyrics (“get stung by a talented wasp/we can hang out when you're out of the hospital”). On paper the Ophelias are gentle but in practice they’re a bit more menacing.
